What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is the holiday that commemorates the day in 1865 when Union Soliers arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the freedom of slaves. This was over two years after The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

The term Juneteenth is a combination of the words June and nineteenth. The holiday has also been referred to as called Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day.

Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 and officially became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.

The Meaning of Juneteenth Colors

Although a red, white, and blue flag is closely associated with Juneteenth, many people of African American heritage celebrate with the red, green, and black Pan-African flag, which was created in 1920. Yellow is often included in the color scheme associated with the flag as well.

Remembering the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre on Black Wall Street

The Tulsa Race Massacre took place for more than 18 hours in the Greenwood section of Tulsa Oklahoma, known as Black Wall Street, from May 31 to June 1, 1921.  The predominantly Black community was attacked by a white mob that burned and destroyed homes and businesses. The massacre began when Dick Rowland, a 19-year-old Black teenager, was falsely accused of assaulting a 17-year-old white elevator operator.
